Low Acid Coffee - There Are No Rules

There are no set rules or guidelines for what qualifies as a low acid coffee. So how do you know if the coffee you are drinking is low acid? If you are drinking one of the national coffee brands or a coffee from the nearly 2,000 other roasters in the United States, there is a very high probability you are drinking coffee high in acid.

mavericks-low-acid--national-coffees How Do You Know?

pH testing is great way to evaluate the overall acidity of a coffee. This is a straight forward and objective means to determine acidity from one coffee to the next.

If you are struggling with acidity in coffee, I recommend that you start with a coffee that has at least a pH of 5.5 or greater. On the pH scale, high scores are better. The way the scale works is any increase of 1 whole unit is a 100% increase (logarithmic). The Richter scale is a good example. So the difference between a 4.8 pH and 5.5 pH coffee is .7 or 70% less acid.
